Beginning Algebra With Applications, Chapter 1, 1.2, Section 1.2, Problem 154

To discourage random guessing on a multiple-choice exam, a professor assigns 5 points for a correct answer, -2 points for an incorrect answer, and 0 points for leaving the question blank. What is the score for a student who had 20 correct answers, had 13 incorrect answers, and left 7 questions blank?

If the student got a correct answer, he/she will get 5 points. If it is incorrect he/she gets -2 points then if he/she leave it blank he/she will get no score. So,

$
\begin{equation}
\begin{aligned}

20(5)+13(-2)+7(0) =& 100+13(-2)+7(0)
\\
=& 100-26+7(0)
\\
=& 74+0
\\
=& 74 \text{ points}

\end{aligned}
\end{equation}
$

The student has a score of 74 points.
