Should nonviolent offenders be in prison with murderers?
Generally speaking, nonviolent offenders are not in prison with murderers, as prison yards are organized by "custody risk." Prisoners with a higher custody risk score, such as murderers, are subject to higher security prison facilities than prisoners with low custody risk scores, such as a habitual shoplifter, or a nonviolent drug dealer.
Prisons are organized this way for a reason. After all, it would hardly make sense to place a violent prisoner in the same facility as someone who has shown no tendency towards violence, as such a dynamic invites victimization and potential security risks. Additionally, it only serves to intensify the "criminalization" process each inmate experiences while incarcerated and could very possibly make a violent offender out of a nonviolent one, which obviously is in everyone's best interest to avoid.
