A mission statement, simply put, defines a company or organization's purpose. It tells the world why it exists. 
For this purpose, it is essential that the mission statement expresses a clear intent. The words contained in the statement should be forceful and straightforward. It should not be couched in ambiguity and should not reflect what is generally seen as cliched or an adherence to buzzwords or fashionable language used to impress. This means that it should be constructed to specifically relate to a business or field and should clarify its strategy. 
An effective mission statement should be able to answer the following questions: 
What do we do? How do we do it? Whom do we do it for? What value do we bring?
If one's mission statement effectively answers these questions, it will provide an excellent base from which the company or organization can work from. The mission statement then becomes the anchor for its operations. Every aspect of its existence, including its vision, is, therefore, structured around it.
Furthermore, a good mission statement provides all those related to the company or organization be it employees, management, service providers, clients, and others, a clear and concise idea of its existence and purpose. Such clarity inspires confidence.
