What are some similar topics in "the Use of Force" and "The Giraffe" by Mauro Senesi?
In both short stories, "The Use of Force" by William Carlos Williams and "The Giraffe" by Mauro Senesi, the authors focus on the topic of ignorance of children and adults.
In "The Use of Force," the sick child is willfully ignorant of the consequences of not cooperating with the doctor. She purposely hides the fact that she has a sore throat which is one of the key diagnostic clues to her illness. In "The Giraffe," the children are ignorant of the needs of the giraffe. They attempt to keep and protect the animal but their ignorance ultimately leads to the giraffe’s death.
In both short stories the adults are just as ignorant. In "The Use of Force," the parents of the sick child are unaware of her sore throat, which places her life in danger. In their ignorance the parents also attempt to cajole and threaten the girl into being cooperative, but it only makes the situation worse. The doctor must force the child’s mouth open causing her some pain, but worse it increases her distrust of the doctor.
In "The Giraffe," the adults do not know how to deal with the giraffe and its needs. This leads to the horrible decision to shoot the giraffe. It is this choice combined with the ignorance of the children’s feeling that cause the children to flee with the animal. Though ultimately the giraffe dies and the adults do not have to deal with it, this ignorance has a detrimental impact on the children and their trust of adults.
