Who is Gulliver and what is the name of his wife?

Lemuel Gulliver is the third of five sons born to a father with a small estate. (We can assume that his eldest brother will inherit the estate, and this is why Gulliver must find work.) He became an apprentice for four years under a Mr. James Bates, a surgeon. He did as much as he could to procure for himself the best education possible, including "Physick"—or medicine—knowing that such a course of study would be quite helpful to have on sea voyages. Gulliver then got a job as a ship's surgeon for about three and a half years, after which he settled in London. He set up a medical practice and got married to a Mary Burton and received a dowry of four hundred pounds. Shortly after this, the practice failed, and he went again to sea. He worked as a ship's surgeon for another six years and then tried to set up another medical practice (which also failed). Finally, he goes back to the sea, and this is where we pick up his story.
