What do Auggie and Jack make for the science fair?
After being partnered up for the science fair, Jack goes to Auggie's house to work on the project. After some routine conversation, they discuss different ideas.
Auggie suggests a sun clock. Jack asks if they can just do a volcano, but Auggie reminds him that everyone does volcanoes. Auggie counters by offering crystal spikes out of Epsom salt. When Jack says that sounds boring, Auggie mentions an organic battery made of potatoes. He is excited about this idea and suggests calling it the "Spud Lamp".
Jack protests that it's too hard and he's not good at science. He finally gives in when Auggie persuades him that it's a good project, and he will help him.
Later, we find out that Jack and Auggie got an A, Jack's first A in any class, and the project was a big hit.
Jack and Auggie are paired up for the science fair. This pairing has all the markings of a disaster as the two boys are opposites: Auggie is studious and hardworking, while Jack looks to play around and have fun. Jack comes to Auggie's house in January to begin working on the project. He feels guilty about his behavior on Halloween and is nervous about how Auggie's family will treat him.
Things go well at Auggie's house, and Jack is impressed by Auggie's computer and video games, but not so impressed by the ideas Auggie suggests for their project. Finally, Jack agrees that they should make a lamp out of a potato.
Together they make a good potato lamp and even get an A, Jack's first A in science, on the project. Auggie is nervous about presenting their findings at the science fair, because of all the people, but does well because he's done a few presentations by this point.
Jack and Auggie were paired up by their science teacher, Ms. Rubin, for the science fair. Although they had been friends earlier in the year, Auggie wasn't talking to Jack then because of some hurtful words he heard Jack say about him to Julian in order to fit in. Jack was hopeful that by being Auggie's science fair partner they could be friends again which eventually happened after Jack apologized.
While Jack was at Auggie's house to work on their science fair project, Auggie found a picture online of an "organic battery" and immediately knew that would be their project. Despite Jack's initial hesitation of how hard it would be, they ended up building what they called a "Spud Lamp." They were able to power a lamp using wires and potatoes. Even though Auggie was self-conscious with all eyes on him at the science fair, their project earned them both an A.
Ms. Rubin, the science teacher, pairs Auggie with Jack for the science fair project. At the time, Auggie is not really friends with Jack because of some mean comments that Jack made to his friends about Auggie during Halloween. Jack wants to renew his friendship with Auggie but does not know how to. He has come to realize that Auggie is a genuine person who cares about other people and is fun to be around. Later on, after he fights with Julian over some nasty comments that Julian makes about Auggie, Jack renews his friendship with Auggie via social media, by apologizing for his actions during Halloween. The two become very good friends afterward.
Auggie and Jack decide to make an “organic battery” out of potatoes for the science fair. They call it the “Spud Lamp.” Their project is one of the best at the fair and earns each of them an “A” grade. This is the first A that Jack gets in any class in the school year.
