What were the conflicts and compromises of the Mexican-American War?

The Mexican-American War started in 1846 and ended in 1848. The Mexican-American War began because there was a conflict over the boundary between Texas and Mexico. Mexico insisted that the boundary should be the Nueces River. The United States thought the boundary should be the Rio Grande River. To resolve this dispute, President Polk sent John Slidell to Mexico to offer a deal that might resolve the dispute. The United States was prepared to offer Mexico $30 million for California, New Mexico, and the rest of the land that currently makes up the southwestern part of the United States. This deal would have satisfied the American objective of getting more land that would allow the United States to expand from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.
However, the deal never occurred. The Mexican government refused to meet with John Slidell. Shortly thereafter, the United States moved its military into the disputed area. The Mexicans, believing that the United States had invaded Mexico, attacked our soldiers. This attack led to the start of the Mexican-American War.
